When a VIP Stops Playing, Don't Automatically Send Another Bonus

14 July 2026 · 6 min read · Nick d’Enis-Rowson

Inactivity is information. A bonus is a guess. The professional first question when a VIP goes quiet is not what to send. It is why they stopped — and whether the next contact should be commercial at all.

Retention journeys are built to treat silence as a funnel problem. Day three: email. Day seven: SMS. Day fourteen: reload. The CRM is doing what it was asked to do. The host’s job is to decide whether that sequence is still the right human response.

Silence has more than one cause

  • They are busy, travelling, or simply done for the month
  • They had a difficult session and do not want to be sold to
  • Something operational broke and they do not trust the brand this week
  • Money, mood or life pressure has changed, and another incentive would be the wrong move
  • The relationship has gone cold because nobody recognised them when it mattered

Only some of those causes are solved by a bonus. Several of them are made worse by one. A host who cannot tell the difference will spend more and keep fewer people.

A player suddenly becomes inactive. Does the team first ask why?

What to do instead

Look at the last moments, not only the last deposit. Was there a delayed withdrawal, a declined request, a big loss, a host change? Then make a human contact that is allowed to have no offer in it. Ask how they are. Listen. Record what you learn. If the right next step is space, give space. If the right next step is service recovery, own it. If the right next step is a responsible conversation, have it.

A VIP host’s responsibility is not to encourage maximum play. It is to manage the customer relationship professionally, responsibly and sustainably. Training should help hosts recognise when the correct response is not another promotion.

Lasting loyalty is not manufactured by the third reload of a quiet month. It is manufactured by hosts who can sit with silence long enough to understand it.
